Recovery Process for Released Hostages: Insights from an Israeli Physician

Nick Schifrin:

The recently released hostages are facing immense mental and, in some cases, physical trauma. Earlier today, I had the opportunity to speak with Professor Hagai Levine, the head of the medical and resilience team for the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, who is involved in meeting with the newly freed hostages.

“Professor Levine, how would you describe their current condition?”

Hagai Levine, from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, responded, “We have already received two women who were part of the hostage group that was released today. Some of them have been able to reconnect with their families.”

“I also received an update from one of the families, and it seems that the grandmother is doing well when we talked to her on the phone. We have also seen photos of them walking, which is a positive sign. However, the road to recovery will be a long one. They will require both mental and physical support, as well as medical examinations to address any underlying health issues.”

“I am already familiar with the medical conditions of some of the hostages. Some of them have severe chronic illnesses that may have been neglected during their captivity. So, in addition to the need for medical examinations, it is crucial for over 200 innocent people who are still being held by Hamas to receive proper medical and psychological care for their recovery.”

“Our hope is that this week, all of them will either be released or, at the very least, receive a visit from the Red Cross for examination and treatment.”
