Recorded: The Hottest Day We Have Ever Experienced

On July 3, the world experienced the hottest day ever recorded, with an average global temperature of 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 Fahrenheit), surpassing the previous record set in August 2016, according to Reuters. This scorching heatwave was felt in various parts of the world, including China, India, the UK, the southern United States, and northern Mexico, as reported by Bloomberg. In North Africa, temperatures soared to an alarming 122F. Even in Antarctica, where it’s currently winter, temperatures were surprisingly high.

However, this record-breaking heatwave is not something to celebrate. Climate scientists declare it as a death sentence for both people and ecosystems. They warn that unless we put an end to greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming through the burning of fossil fuels, temperatures will continue to rise. The recent development of El Nino conditions in the tropical Pacific, after seven years, also adds to the intensity of the heat. The World Meteorological Organization secretary-general cautioned that the onset of El Nino significantly increases the likelihood of breaking more temperature records. Another climate expert grimly predicts that this record will be the first of many to come this year.

It is evident that urgent action needs to be taken to address climate change and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Otherwise, we will continue to face more extreme and devastating heatwaves in the future.
