Record-breaking $1.58 Billion Jackpot Won with Mega Millions Ticket Sold in Neptune Beach, Florida

A historic Mega Millions jackpot worth an estimated $1.58 billion was won by a single ticket sold at a Publix supermarket in Neptune Beach, Florida. Neptune Beach, located on the Atlantic coast near Jacksonville, is now home to the lucky winner(s) who have yet to be publicly identified.

The winning Mega Millions numbers for this incredible jackpot were 13, 19, 20, 32, 33, and the Mega Ball was 14.

The winner(s) can choose between receiving an estimated lump sum payment of $783.3 million before taxes or opting for the annuity option. The annuity option includes an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase in value, eventually totaling the full jackpot amount minus taxes.

This jackpot had been steadily growing since it was last won in New York in mid-April. 31 drawings were held without a single participant matching all six numbers until the 32nd drawing changed that.

Not only is this the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history, but it is also the third biggest lottery jackpot ever recorded in the United States. In February, a gas station near Los Angeles sold a winning ticket for a $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot, setting a new record. In January 2016, winning tickets were purchased in California, Florida, and Tennessee, sharing a $1.586 billion Powerball prize.

It is still unclear whether the $1.58 billion Mega Millions jackpot from Tuesday night surpasses the previously mentioned grand prize.

This summer has seen two billion-dollar jackpots up for grabs. Last month, a Powerball player in Los Angeles won a $1.08 billion jackpot. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are approximately 1 in 302.58 million. Mega Millions tickets, priced at $2 each, are available for purchase in all states except Alabama, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada, as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. EDT.
