A young man, aged 21, has been given a 40-year-to-life prison sentence after fatally shooting another man at a Garden Grove hotel two years ago.
The convicted individual, Enrique Torres, was found guilty in March of second-degree murder. He received sentencing enhancements for using a firearm to cause significant bodily harm or death, as well as for personal firearm use. The incident occurred on January 17, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel located at 11999 Harbor Blvd. The victim was 28-year-old Eddie Barajas from Stanton.
According to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Cornwell, Barajas and his friends visited the hotel around 3:40 a.m. that morning to attend a party. There, they became involved in a verbal altercation with Agustin Cortez and Torres.
Although Cortez initially faced charges in connection with the attack, the prosecution later dismissed the case against him.
The exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, but there were allegations of someone shouting a gang name, as stated by Cornwell.
As the argument between the two groups escalated into a physical altercation, Barajas briefly crouched down to place his beer on the ground. When he stood up, he was shot in the head, shared Cornwell.
Prior to the escalation, Barajas was heard saying, “Let’s just have a good day,” according to Cornwell.
Torres managed to escape, but he was arrested on May 18, 2021.
