Reasons Why Certain Cities Have Moved Away from Traditional Fireworks Displays

In a move towards eco-friendliness and safety, cities like Boulder, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah have replaced traditional fireworks with drone light shows for this year’s Fourth of July celebrations. According to Rick Boss, president of Sky Elements Drone Shows, drone shows are considered a safer alternative, particularly when the risk of wildfires is high. He emphasizes that drones leave no smoke or debris behind, reducing the risk of fire, damage, and injury. Some cities have also opted for laser light shows.

This shift away from fireworks is motivated by concern over smoke pollution, which worsens the already poor air quality caused by wildfires in many parts of the US. Researchers have observed that Fourth of July celebrations typically contribute to a 40% increase in fine particulate pollution, exacerbating respiratory symptoms in individuals with respiratory problems. Pallavi Pant, head of global health at the Health Effects Institute, highlights the worldwide correlation between fireworks and poor air quality.

Boulder officials justified their decision to replace traditional fireworks with drones by citing the increased fire risk associated with climate change. The drones used in these displays can create intricate shapes, surpassing the visual impact of traditional fireworks. However, they are subject to weather limitations. As Boulder experienced inclement weather, officials cautioned that the drones cannot operate under conditions of sustained winds over 20 mph, heavy rain, lightning, or visibility under 3 miles.
