Greta Gerwig’s Stance: No CGI for Actors’ Feet

  • Greta Gerwig recently disclosed in an interview that she adamantly rejected the use of CGI in the upcoming “Barbie” movie.
  • During the interview, Gerwig mentioned being asked about using special effects for Barbie’s iconic arched feet.
  • “I was absolutely terrified by the idea!” Gerwig exclaimed, recalling her initial reaction.

Greta Gerwig recently shared her strong reaction to the suggestion of using CGI for the signature arched feet of Barbie in her upcoming film about the celebrated doll.

“There was a major discussion at the beginning. Everyone asked, ‘Will you CGI all the feet?'” recounted Gerwig during a recent appearance on Australia’s “The Project,” as reported by Variety’s Zack Scharf.

“I found it absolutely terrifying! It felt like a nightmare,” added the director. “Plus, Margot has the most beautiful feet – like those of a dancer.”

In the end, Gerwig decided to have Margot Robbie, the film’s star, cling to a bar off camera to maintain the signature arched feet of Barbie.

In the film’s main trailer, fans caught a glimpse of Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) elegantly stepping out of pink heels in her Dream House, with her feet retaining their arched shape even after removing the shoes.

Later in the trailer, a conflict arises when Barbie’s feet flatten, causing the other Barbie characters in Barbie Land to react with disgust and horror.

In a previous interview with Architectural Digest, Gerwig discussed the creation of Barbie’s pink and highly-stylized world.

“I wanted the audience to feel like they could reach through the screen and touch everything,” expressed Gerwig, reminiscing about the excitement of standing in Toys ‘R’ Us and wanting to unbox the Barbie toys and explore every detail.
