Reaction of DOJ Prosecutors to Trump’s Social Media Post

In the arraignment of Donald Trump on felony charges related to the 2020 election, the presiding judge warned him against attempting to “influence a juror or try to threaten or bribe a witness or retaliate against anyone” connected to the case. Despite claiming to understand this, Trump’s team now faces a request for a protective order filed by prosecutors working for special counsel Jack Smith. The order aims to restrict the sharing of evidence in the case, with one of Trump’s social media posts being cited as evidence by the prosecution.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump posted a video criticizing Smith and others involved in his legal issues, including Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, and Fani Willis. Referring to them as President Biden’s “unscrupulous accomplices,” Trump warned that he would come after those who go after him. Prosecutors cited this second social media post as a reason to request a court order preventing Trump from sharing sensitive discovery evidence publicly. They argue that Trump’s previous statements about witnesses and legal matters suggest a potential risk of him doing so. In response to the filing, a statement from a Trump spokesperson defended the post as political speech without providing further explanation.
