Raskin criticizes addition of ‘faith’ in Biden’s drug control strategy as ‘absurd’

Representative Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) delivered a strong rebuke to Representative Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) during a hearing on Thursday. Gosar had suggested that President Biden’s national drug control strategy was flawed because it did not mention God or faith. Raskin dismissed this idea as “preposterous” and pointed out that including references to religion in the strategy would violate the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits Congress from establishing a religion.

“The gentleman is somehow seeking a religious test, which is explicitly forbidden by the Constitution for people in public office, in the drug control strategy,” Raskin stated. “While faith can influence individuals and their paths to recovery, there are many sources of strength people can draw from, including religious faith, friends and family, and psychology, among others.”

“But the idea that our drug strategy is flawed because it doesn’t focus on religion seems preposterous,” added Raskin, who is the leading Democrat on the House Oversight panel.

Raskin was responding to Gosar’s criticism that the Biden administration’s drug control strategy is flawed because it doesn’t mention God and faith.

“Biden’s National Drug Control Strategy is 150 pages long. The words ‘God’ and ‘faith’ are not mentioned once,” Gosar argued. He then seemed to imply a connection between increased government assistance, a lack of faith in God, and an increase in drug overdoses.

Gosar quoted Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., saying “unemployment kills,” and added, “The left offers endless benefits. In other words, dependency. Because a dependent population votes for the providers of those benefits. But a human being needs a purpose — a good job, the ability to provide for a family, a belief in a creator — to be happy.”
