Rachel Daly of Aston Villa and Erling Haaland of Manchester City have been awarded the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) players’ player of the year awards. The PFA young players of the year were Lauren James of Chelsea and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal.
Daly and James played crucial roles for England in their recent run to the World Cup final, but these awards were based on their performances last season. Saka had an outstanding season for both his club and country, earning him the men’s young player of the year award. Arsenal legend Ian Wright received the men’s PFA Merit award, while former England international Jill Scott was honored with the women’s Merit award.
Daly’s victory in the senior women’s player category is well-deserved, as she scored an impressive 22 goals for Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League last season, despite playing as a left-back in the Euros. James, on the other hand, played a key role in Chelsea’s double-winning season.
Haaland had a phenomenal debut season with Manchester City, scoring a remarkable 52 goals in all competitions as they secured the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles. He was named the Premier League’s top player, beating out competition from his teammates and other talented individuals like Saka and Harry Kane.
Both Haaland and Saka expressed their gratitude for receiving these prestigious awards and reflected on their successful seasons. Saka had his finest season to date, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists for Arsenal, while also impressing on the international stage.
To celebrate the PFA awards’ 50th anniversary, individual player prizes were also given out for the first time in the Championship, League One, and League Two. Chuba Akpom, Conor Chaplin, and Andy Cook were honored as the top players in their respective divisions.
