Quiet and Unassuming Director of Smyth’s Toys, Liam Smyth, Receives Heartfelt Tributes

The funeral of the late Mayo businessman took place on Wednesday in a packed St Colman’s Church in his hometown of Claremorris.

Mr. Smyth, along with his brothers, was a director of the well-established Smyths Toys chain, which has transformed their local toy shop into a major player in the European retail landscape.

Smyths Toys, founded in Mayo, now operates over 200 stores in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

The Claremorris Chamber of Commerce spoke highly of Mr. Smyth, describing him as a proud Claremorris citizen and a former president of the organization.

“He always dedicated himself to enhancing the local economy and amenities for the benefit of all residents. From the DeCare dental insurer to the widespread availability of fiber broadband, from the leisure center and swimming pool to the lake walks and athletic track, he played a significant role in their development,” stated the chamber.

“Together with his brothers Anthony, Padraig, and Tommy, they accomplished what few Irish businesses can — transforming a small-town shop into a global powerhouse,” added the chamber.

The Claremorris Leisure Centre, where Mr. Smyth served as a director, also paid tribute to his contributions.

“Liam played a significant role in both the old and new pool. In 2006, he envisioned the construction of a state-of-the-art leisure center here in Claremorris,” shared the center.

“His tireless work and dedication made this vision a reality, leading to the opening of the new pool in 2009. Despite his busy schedule, he always found time to contribute to the leisure center, quietly and modestly,” the center added.

Mr. Smyth also served as a coach for various groups in the swimming club, including the town’s water polo teams.

In respect of his passing, the leisure center was closed yesterday evening and this morning.

The Claremorris GAA club expressed the impact of Mr. Smyth’s loss on the local community.

The club referred to him as the “quiet man” who offered substantial support and advice behind the scenes.

“The amount of kindness he displayed in this community will never be fully known, and Liam would have preferred it that way,” stated the team.

Mr. Smyth is survived by his wife Anne and their five sons.
