Puzzlingly Poor Performance from a Runner at University Games

Somalia’s sports minister issued a public apology on Wednesday and instructed the suspension of the chairwoman of the national track and field federation. The reason behind this action was the participation of an apparently untrained female sprinter, Nasra Abukar Ali, in the World University Games held in China. Nasra Abukar took over 20 seconds to complete a 100-meter race, which was widely criticized. Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Barre Mohamud, admitted that his ministry was unaware how Nasra Abukar Ali had been selected to participate in the women’s 100-meter race at the student games in Chengdu on Tuesday. Furthermore, the ministry released a statement urging the Somalia Olympic Committee to suspend Khadija Aden Dahir, the chairwoman of the national athletics federation, due to allegations that Nasra Abukar Ali was her relative and had been given the opportunity to compete due to their connection.

Contrary to the claims of the Somali university union, Nasra Abukar Ali did participate in the games. However, her slow performance was evident as she lagged behind the other runners, finishing approximately 10 seconds after the winner. Videos capturing her race circulated on social media, causing embarrassment to Somalia. Despite finishing last, Nasra Abukar Ali celebrated by doing a small jump as she crossed the finish line.
