Putin maintains silence as Russian diplomats hold talks with North Korea and China following Wagner rebellion

China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang holds a meeting with Russia’s Andrei Rudenko in Beijing following the Wagner rebellion, as President Vladimir Putin maintains silence on the matter. The meeting was documented in a brief news release by China’s Foreign Ministry.

On June 25, senior Russian diplomats met with North Korea’s vice foreign minister Im Chon Il and China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang. This meeting took place in the aftermath of the Wagner rebellion. Qin Gang’s meeting with Andrei Rudenko was disclosed in a concise news release from China’s Foreign Ministry.

“State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko in Beijing and exchanged views with him on Sino-Russian relations and international and regional issues of common concern,” stated China’s Foreign Ministry in the news release.

The meeting occurred after China briefly commented on the withdrawal of Wagner Group mercenaries from military strongholds in southern Russia. China’s Foreign Ministry expressed support for Russia’s national stability, development, and prosperity, emphasizing their friendly neighborly relations and comprehensive strategic partnership.

The Russian Foreign Ministry acknowledged China’s support and expressed gratitude. They stated that China expressed support for the Russian government’s efforts to stabilize the situation in the country and reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and prosperity of Russia.

During his stop in Beijing, Rudenko is scheduled to hold further discussions with Liu Xiaomin, China’s special representative for the affairs of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, Im Chon Il, North Korea’s vice foreign minister, met with Alexandr Matsegora, Russia’s ambassador to North Korea, and voiced their firm belief in the successful suppression of the armed rebellion in Russia. Im Chon Il expressed the DPRK’s strong support for any decisions made by the Russian leadership and their confidence in the Russian army’s ability to overcome trials and emerge victorious in the military operation against Ukraine.
