Purposeful Delays in State Test-Scores Aim to Conceal Information from Parents

The State Education Department of New York is facing criticism from parents and advocates for its lack of transparency and accountability. This is due to the repeated delay in releasing student results on statewide math and English exams for the second year in a row. Despite these exams being easy to score and with results that should have been available within weeks, SED has chosen to keep parents and school leaders in the dark without any valid reason. Last year, the scores were only released eight weeks into the new school term after legal action was taken. In New York City, less than half of public school students were proficient in language arts and math, with even worse results for Black and Hispanic students.

Under the guidance of Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, SED and the Board of Regents have been actively opposing standardized testing and the achievement it helps measure. In March, SED announced changes to the scoring criteria for grades 3-8 assessments to better align with the “new normal” in student achievement. This essentially means lowering the standards for proficiency based on last year’s lower scores, effectively covering up the significant learning loss caused by extended school closures and inadequate remote learning.

Despite the decline in student performance, public-school spending in New York has reached record highs. The $9 billion provided to Empire State schools through President Biden’s “American Rescue Plan” remains unaccounted for. Rather than addressing this wasteful expenditure, Rosa and her colleagues seem complicit in it. Furthermore, it is expected that SED will demand even more state school aid next year, burdening taxpayers and further compromising the education of students.
