Protests at Venice premiere of Woody Allen movie fuel fervent opposition to rape culture

Renowned filmmaker Woody Allen made an appearance at the Venice Film Festival to premiere his latest film, “Coup de Chance.” However, protesters along the red carpet expressed their discontent with loud chants of “No rape culture!”

Video footage from the demonstration shows protesters being pulled away from the event. These protests stem from allegations made against Allen years ago, accusing him of molesting his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. The protesters also distributed papers with the message “Turn the spotlight off of rapists” in both English and Italian.

Although Allen has remained a controversial figure since the allegations, he has never faced any charges in relation to the accusations. Despite the protests, Allen received a three-minute standing ovation at the festival’s conclusion.

“Coup de Chance” has garnered mixed reviews, with some critics hailing it as Allen’s best film of the past decade. In a rare interview with Variety, Allen dismissed the notion of cancel culture and reaffirmed that the allegations against him have been thoroughly investigated and found to be without merit.

Allen further expressed his willingness to see Dylan Farrow, although they have not crossed paths since she made the allegations. He then discussed his marriage to Soon-Yi Previn, Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter, and their two adopted children.

Alongside Allen, filmmakers Luc Besson and Roman Polanski were also invited to showcase their work at the Venice Film Festival. Besson faced allegations of rape in 2018, which were ultimately dismissed. Polanski, on the other hand, has a controversial past, having been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor in 1977.

“Coup de Chance” is scheduled for release in France on September 27. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please visit the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime for assistance.
