08:06 NEW YORK — It is with heavy hearts that we remember Dr. Max Gomez, a renowned journalist and esteemed medical reporter for CBS New York, who passed away on Saturday after a courageous battle with illness. He was 72 years old. 

A Remarkable Career Dedicated to Medical Journalism

Dr. Gomez served as a medical reporter and health editor for WCBS-TV from 1994 to 1997 before returning to CBS New York as our chief medical correspondent in June 2007. Prior to this, he held positions as the health and science editor for WNBC-TV, WNEW-TV, and KYW-TV in Philadelphia. His commitment to his craft was exemplified by the respect and admiration he garnered from our newsroom, colleagues in the medical field, patients who shared their stories with him, and our viewers. Dr. Gomez was a beacon of knowledge and compassion, always willing to go the extra mile to help others.

Accolades and Contributions to Medical Journalism

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Gomez received numerous accolades, including multiple New York Emmy Awards, Philadelphia Emmys, a UPI honor for Best Documentary for his groundbreaking report on AIDS, and an Excellence in a Time of Crisis Award from the New York City Health Department after 9/11, which held a special place in his heart. National television journalism awards from The Marfan Foundation and the Leukemia Society of America also recognized his exceptional report on twin girls from Long Island who underwent bone marrow transplants from their 7-year-old sister. Dr. Gomez was named the American Health Foundation’s Man of the Year and was a NASA Journalist In Space semifinalist in 1986.

Dr. Gomez’s medical reporting not only showcased his breadth of knowledge, but also his unwavering dedication to the field. Dr. Gomez was also actively involved in mentoring undergraduate journalism and medical students, as well as physicians interested in medical journalism. His thirst for knowledge was insatiable, and he could discuss anything from sports and travel to current events with equal passion and expertise. 

A Legacy of Compassion and Wisdom

Dr. Gomez was born in Cuba and later moved to Miami with his family. He graduated cum laude from Princeton University, earned a Ph.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and completed an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Rockefeller University. His legacy lives on through his children, Max Gomez IV and Katie Gomez.
