Prominent Actress Bravely Takes Legal Action Against Weinstein and Disney

Julia Ormond, a talented actress renowned for her roles in major films during the 1990s, has taken legal action by filing a lawsuit against disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Ormond accuses Weinstein of sexually assaulting her in 1995 and deliberately impeding her career. Additionally, she is placing blame on the Walt Disney Co., Miramax, and her former agents for being aware of Weinstein’s misconduct but choosing to ignore it. The lawsuit has been filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a recently passed law that provides a temporary window for individuals to come forward with allegations of sexual assault that surpass the state’s standard timeline for reporting, reports the AP.

Ormond claims that she was on the path to stardom when she first encountered Weinstein in 1994. She asserts that she maintained contact with him for professional reasons, such as discussing scripts and projects, and eventually entered into a production agreement with Miramax, where Weinstein held a key position as co-chairman. According to Ormond, she was a victim of sexual battery committed by Weinstein in December 1995 after a business meeting. Following this incident, she confronted him weeks later and faced retaliation, which had a detrimental impact on her career. Ormond reveals that she informed her US agents at the time, Creative Artists Agency, but received no support. Instead, she was advised against taking any legal action or pursuing other avenues. Ormond holds CAA, Disney, and Miramax accountable, asserting that they were aware of Weinstein’s dangerous behavior towards women but chose to turn a blind eye and offered no assistance.

The lawsuit highlights the fact that “none of these prominent companies warned Ormond that Weinstein had a history of assaulting women because he was too important, too powerful, and made them too much money.” This is the first time that Ormond has publicly come forward with accusations of sexual assault against Weinstein. Weinstein, who is currently serving a prison sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in New York in 2020, has appealed both convictions. Imran Ansari, an attorney representing Weinstein, adamantly denies the allegations made by Julia Ormond and asserts that his client will vigorously defend himself. CAA, Disney, and Miramax have not yet commented on the matter. Ormond’s notable film credits include Legends of the Fall, Sabrina, and First Knight.
