Disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was involved in a violent altercation at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida. During this altercation, Nassar sustained multiple stab wounds in his back and chest. Fortunately, Nassar is currently in stable condition as of Monday. Larry Nassar, who is serving lengthy prison sentences for his misconduct as a sports doctor, has admitted to sexually assaulting athletes while employed by Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. Nassar has also pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography. Several athletes who suffered abuse under Nassar’s care testified that they had, at various points, disclosed the abuse to adults such as coaches and athletic trainers, but their reports went unheeded.
Furthermore, over 100 women, including Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, collectively pursued legal action against the federal government due to the FBI’s failure to intervene when allegations against Nassar surfaced in 2015. Nassar was eventually arrested by Michigan State University police in 2016, over a year later. Michigan State University, accused of neglecting its responsibility to stop Nassar, has reached a settlement of $500 million with over 300 of Nassar’s victims. Additionally, USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee have agreed to a $380 million settlement.
