Prime Minister of Japan Raises Concerns About Russia’s ‘Nuclear Threat’

In a solemn speech commemorating the 78th anniversary of the atomic bomb that devastated Hiroshima, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed concerns about Russia’s nuclear threats and reiterated Japan’s commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons.

Kishida stated, “As the only nation to have witnessed the horrifying consequences of nuclear devastation during war, Japan will persistently work towards achieving a ‘world without nuclear weapons.'” His remarks were a tribute to the victims, their families, and those still suffering from the aftereffects of the bomb.

Concerned about Russia’s threat and other challenges, Kishida acknowledged the increased difficulty of the mission ahead. However, he emphasized the need to refocus efforts in light of these circumstances.

“The growing division within the international community regarding nuclear disarmament, coupled with Russia’s nuclear threat and other concerns, makes our journey more challenging. Nevertheless, it is precisely due to these circumstances that it becomes imperative for us to revitalize international momentum towards realizing a ‘world without nuclear weapons,'” Kishida remarked.

Kishida highlighted the significance of the recent Group of Seven Hiroshima Summit, where world leaders listened to testimonies from atomic bomb survivors. He asserted that an accurate understanding of the tragic realities of the bombings serves as the starting point for progress.

Recent actions by Russia have further heightened concerns. The country has escalated its nuclear position against Ukraine and the West, notably by transferring nuclear tactical weapons to Belarus for the first time since 1962.

Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian President and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, recently stated that if Ukraine succeeds in its counteroffensive against Russia to regain its territory, Russia would feel compelled to use nuclear weapons.
