Prevent Common Plant Mistakes Before Going on Vacation to Ensure Survival: Advice from a Gardening Expert

A gardening expert has shared valuable advice on how to properly care for houseplants while on vacation. David Domoney, a horticulturalist, emphasized the importance of not overwatering plants, as this can lead to root rot. He explained that many plants actually thrive when their owners are away because they are often killed by excessive care and attention. Domoney specifically highlighted the issue of pot covers with solid bases, which trap water and suffocate the plants.

To address this problem, Domoney recommended placing plant pots on damp towels in the bathtub. By doing so, the towels absorb enough moisture to keep the plants hydrated without drowning them. Additionally, the white color of most bathtubs reflects light, which benefits the plants. Domoney also suggested using drip-watering gadgets while on vacation. These devices come in various designs, including pouches with wicks or siphoning systems, allowing owners to find the best solution for their plants.

Regarding regular watering, Domoney prefers bottom watering, where plants absorb water from the pot’s base. He advised placing the pot in a sink filled with about an inch or two of water and allowing the compost to hydrate. After half an hour, the excess water can be drained, and the plants can be returned to their shelves. This method ensures that the plants are adequately hydrated without sitting in water. Domoney emphasized that plants will show signs of wilting or can be tested with a finger dipped in the compost to determine if they need more water.

In terms of creating a humid environment for the plants, Domoney suggested using a shallow bowl or plate filled with garden stones. Placing the plant pot on top of the stones, whether on a windowsill or a radiator in winter, allows excess water to evaporate, providing both the plants and their owners with the desired humidity. By following these tips, individuals can ensure their houseplants survive and thrive while they’re away on holiday.
