16 Individuals Charged With Felonies as ‘False Electors’

The “false electors” in Michigan who attempted to overturn President Biden’s 2020 election victory are now facing real criminal charges. On Tuesday, State Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that the 16 Republicans involved have been charged with eight felonies, including conspiracy to commit election law forgery, as reported by the Detroit News. Nessel, a Democrat, stated that on December 14, 2020, the 16 individuals “met secretly in the basement of the Michigan Republican Party headquarters” and falsely claimed to be the duly elected and qualified electors for President and Vice President of the United States of America for the State of Michigan.

The forged documents stated that Trump had won Michigan’s 16 electoral votes, despite Biden winning the state by a margin of 154,000 votes, approximately 3%. Nessel clarified that these documents were “sent to the United States Senate and National Archives as part of a coordinated effort to allocate the state’s electoral votes to their preferred candidate.” Nessel further stated, “The actions of these false electors undermined the public’s trust in the integrity of our elections. Throughout my tenure, my department has prosecuted numerous cases of election law violations, and it would be a grave failure if we did not act in this situation given the overwhelming evidence of an organized attempt to circumvent the legally cast ballots of millions of Michigan voters in the presidential election.”

The 16 individuals who have been charged include Meshawn Maddock, a former co-chair of the state GOP, and Republican National Committeewoman Kathy Berden, as reported by NPR. Vance Patrick, chairman of the Oakland County Republican Party, criticized the charges as an “egregious abuse of power by a radical progressive,” according to the Detroit News.
