Preseason Opener: Saints Triumph 26-24 over Chiefs

The New Orleans Saints seized the opportunity presented by a turnover and secured victory with a last-second, 31-yard field goal. Blake Grupe’s successful kick breathed new life into the Saints, reclaiming the lead as the clock hit zero.

The conclusion of the game was unfortunate for the Kansas City Chiefs’ second and third-string players, who showed immense effort and potential in a valiant comeback. However, this preseason game serves as a reminder that there are valuable lessons for the Chiefs to learn.

Head Coach Andy Reid reflected on the game, stating, “Overall, it was beneficial to have a game. The starters need to elevate their performance on both offense and defense. It wasn’t up to par, so we have areas to improve upon. Nevertheless, it was great to see the younger players in action. They exhibited impressive skills across various positions…We just can’t end on a mistake.”

Despite the final score, rookie wide receiver Nikko Remigio shone in Sunday’s game, showcasing his talent with four receptions for 71 yards. The Chiefs also witnessed strong defensive performances from linebacker Drue Tranquill, safety Chamarri Conner, and defensive tackle Danny Shelton, who each registered a sack.

In terms of injuries, rookies cornerback Nic Jones (fractured fingers) and defensive back Anthony Witherstone (toe) had to exit the game early.

Following this game, the Chiefs will return to training camp and hold another open practice at Missouri Western State University on Tuesday. They will then continue their preseason journey with a matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.
