Aug. 29 (UPI) — Franklin, the first major hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, remained a very powerful category 4 storm early Tuesday, with forecasters warning that it was generating life-threatening surf and rip currents in Bermuda and the Southeast coast of the United States. In the latest update at 2 a.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center reported that the storm was positioned 405 miles west-southwest of Bermuda and had maximum sustained winds of 145 mph, classifying it as a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Franklin was moving north at a speed of 9 mph.
Meteorologists predict that Franklin will continue to strengthen throughout the night before gradually weakening on Tuesday afternoon.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for Bermuda, indicating that tropical storm conditions may occur in the region within the next 48 hours. The center of Franklin is expected to pass well to the west of Bermuda on Wednesday.
The hazardous surf and rip currents caused by the storm have already begun to impact Bermuda and the southeast coast of the United States. The National Hurricane Center warns that these conditions will likely spread northward along the east coast of the U.S. and Atlantic Canada in the coming days.
While Franklin heads towards Bermuda, Tropical Storm Idalia is approaching Florida and is forecasted to make landfall as a hurricane on Wednesday.
