Potential for 56,000 individuals in Ireland to significant delay or completely prevent dementia.

Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), a global federation of over 100 associations, is urging the Irish Government, as well as governments worldwide, to allocate funding towards research, education, and support services for reducing the risk of dementia. ADI CEO, Paola Barbarino, emphasizes the importance of risk reduction as new treatments may not be immediately available or suitable for the majority of cases. Implementing strategies to reduce the risk of developing dementia is crucial in tackling the increasing number of cases. There is strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of pre- and post-diagnosis risk reduction. Numerous modifiable risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, limited social contact, head injuries, and certain conditions including diabetes, hearing loss, depression, obesity, and hypertension contribute to dementia. Governments play a vital role in addressing additional risk factors like air pollution and limited access to early education. They are responsible for providing accessible healthcare and long-term care services to enhance the lives of individuals with dementia. ADI calls upon governments to invest in research, support services, and awareness campaigns that effectively communicate risk reduction strategies. Raising awareness and providing necessary information, advice, and support services are critical in preventing as many cases of dementia as possible. Ms Barbarino underlines the significance of reducing dementia risk factors both before and after diagnosis in Ireland, in order to decrease the projected 142,000 dementia cases by 2050. While there have been notable advancements in dementia drug therapy, concerns persist regarding the suitability and accessibility of these treatments for those who need them the most. The issue of time and equitable access during the eventual roll-out of these emerging treatments is a major concern.
