A radical bill currently under debate in California poses a threat by categorizing parents as child abusers if they refuse to “affirm” their child’s confusion regarding their sexual identity.
AB 957, which has already been approved by California’s State Assembly, mandates that judges presiding over custody disputes involving transgender children favor the parent who supports the child’s self-declared gender identity. Parents who choose to acknowledge and affirm their child’s biological sex are considered outcasts.
This dangerous legislation is rooted in the belief that it is beneficial and compassionate to comply with a child’s momentary gender confusion. However, this premise is not only destructive, but also short-sighted and foolish on multiple levels.
In recent years, cases of gender dysphoria or gender identity disorders have significantly increased. The cause of this phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that gender-confused children tend to form clusters. Essentially, when one child begins to question their gender or exhibit behaviors related to gender confusion, others follow suit. In some cases, experimenting with drugs and surgeries has become a trend.

The rise of gender confusion among children is not only deeply sad, but also a direct challenge to the beautiful design for humanity established by God. It is heartbreaking to witness children and their struggling parents in such circumstances. At Focus on the Family, the organization I lead, we are dedicated to helping parents navigate and provide crucial assistance during these crises.
Unfortunately, our culture is leading and encouraging children down a perilous path by affirming their sexual confusion. Some medical practitioners and activists have unscrupulously coined the term “gender-affirming care” to euphemistically describe irreversible mutilation and alteration of children’s bodies.
What adds to this tragedy is the fact that sociologists suggest that a significant majority (upwards of 80 percent) of children experiencing gender confusion will eventually revert back to their biological gender. In other words, they outgrow it.
Mark Yarhouse, a psychology professor at Wheaton College, explains that “most children who meet the criteria for gender dysphoria do not continue to meet the criteria as they grow up and enter adolescence.”
However, for those who undergo hormonal treatments and surgeries, fully “de-transitioning” becomes nearly impossible.

In contrast to the explosion of confusion and abuse in the United States, more progressive countries in Europe are beginning to acknowledge reality.
The Norwegian Healthcare Investigation Board recently recommended that so-called sex-change operations and puberty blockers only be used in research settings, not on children. This acknowledgment signifies the absence of scientific justification for these abusive practices.

The UKOM, an independent government watchdog over Norway’s healthcare system, stated, “The knowledge base, especially research-based knowledge for gender-affirming treatment (hormonal and surgical), is deficient and the long-term effects are little known. This is particularly true for the teenage population where the stability of their gender incongruence is also not known.”
Norway is not alone in this realization. Officials in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, and France have made similar decisions. The controversial Tavistock Gender Clinic in the U.K. was shut down last year, and the United Kingdom’s National Health Service recently announced a ban on puberty blockers for children.
Leadership, whether in business or family life, entails recognizing reality and proposing solutions to problems. Affirming confusion and falsehoods does no favors for children; in fact, it enslaves them to a lifetime of regret. We owe our children both truth and compassion, as well as clear understanding of their circumstances. California legislators, on the other hand, are perpetuating lies and confusion.
