Pope released from hospital after undergoing abdominal surgery

Pope Francis has been discharged from a hospital in Rome on Friday following a successful abdominal surgery he underwent last week.

The 86-year-old pontiff spent nine days at Gemelli Policlinic hospital after undergoing hernia repair surgery. The medical team responsible for the pope’s care stated that the procedure went smoothly, and his recovery is progressing as expected, according to the official news service of the Holy See, Vatican News.

“The pope is in good health and better than before,” stated Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who performed the procedure, on Friday, according to The Associated Press.

Prior to returning to the Vatican, Pope Francis made a stop at Rome’s Marian Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore to offer a prayer. He had previously done the same after being hospitalized for bronchitis in April and undergoing colon surgery in July 2021.

The pope is expected to resume his regular Sunday appearance to recite the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, although he will not hold a general audience on Wednesday to prioritize his post-operative recovery, as reported by Vatican News.
