Pollen Alert: Millions to Suffer from Hay Fever Misery as Today Marks the ‘Worst Day of the Year’

Warning for hay fever sufferers as experts predict that today could potentially be the worst day of the year for allergy symptoms. The Met Office map reveals that pollen levels are very high in all but three areas of the UK. June 22, also known as ‘Hay Day,’ statistically sees the highest hay fever activity. While there is some uncertainty about whether today will be the absolute worst, it is expected to be among the most severe.

This weekend, the misery is expected to continue, with ‘very high’ pollen counts forecasted across the majority of the country. Only Scotland’s northern-most regions are excluded from the highest alert today. The Met Office has issued red alerts for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, covering large parts of Britain.

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen, which is a fine powder derived from plants, trees, and grass. It is estimated that around 10 million people in the UK suffer from hay fever. Symptoms include a runny nose, itchy eyes, a tickly throat, headaches, and tiredness. To alleviate symptoms, individuals are advised to apply Vaseline around their nose to trap pollen or wear wrap-around sunglasses for eye protection.

As the weekend concludes, pollen levels are expected to decrease across the country, leaving only three areas with ‘very high’ levels: East of England, South West England, and London & South East England. Unfortunately, hay fever sufferers in England can anticipate another wave of ‘very high’ pollen levels at the start of the following week, particularly on Monday, June 26. Additional tips for managing hay fever include showering upon returning home, keeping windows closed during high pollen periods in the early mornings and evenings, and avoiding outdoor activities such as gardening and hanging laundry.

The current surge in pollen levels is primarily attributed to grass pollen, according to the Met Office. ‘Very high’ pollen alerts are in effect for all areas except Orkney and Shetland, Grampian, and Highlands and Eilean Siar. The same warnings remain in place for London and the South East, the South West, and the East throughout the weekend. The rest of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland experience fluctuating pollen levels between ‘high’ and ‘very high,’ while medium warnings are applicable to Scotland’s northern-most regions on certain days.

Now is an opportune time to assemble a Hay Fever First Aid Kit, suggested by HayMax creator Mr. Wiseberg.
