Poll reveals limited impact on Biden’s popularity despite robust backing for Medicare drug negotiations

A new poll reveals that a significant majority of Americans are in favor of Medicare’s newly granted powers to negotiate prices for certain prescription drugs. However, despite this policy implementation, President Biden has not received a substantial political boost.

According to the recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, 86 percent of Democrats and 66 percent of Republicans support Medicare’s updated abilities to negotiate prices. The poll also found that 20 percent of Americans remain neutral on the issue, while 6 percent outright oppose it.

In 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act was passed, granting the federal government the authority to negotiate prices for Medicare. This has long been a priority for Democrats.

The passage of this law was a significant achievement for President Biden. However, it is unclear if the American public, even those who support the idea of government negotiation on Medicare prices, are giving the president credit for it.

According to the poll, Biden’s approval rating stands at 40 percent, with 50 percent of Americans disapproving of his handling of prescription drug prices and only 48 percent approving.

The poll suggests that the gap between those who support the new Medicare policy and those who support Biden indicates a struggle for the administration to connect its accomplishments with the president’s personal popularity.

While Democrats generally approve of Biden’s handling of the issue, one-third of independents and one-quarter of Republicans also approve of his efforts to lower drug costs.

The report highlights that “Republicans are still much more likely to approve of how Biden is handling prescription drug prices than they are to approve of his job efforts overall,” with 8 percent of Republicans approving of his work so far.

Overall, the poll demonstrates that all voters want the federal government to increase its efforts in negotiating with pharmaceutical companies to lower prescription drug prices.

Biden is facing a reelection campaign next year and is expected to contend with former President Trump in the general election, given Trump’s current dominance in GOP primary polling. Polls indicate that a rematch of the 2020 election would be a close race.
