A recent survey revealed that a majority of Americans consider a candidate’s stance on abortion when casting their votes for public office.
The poll, conducted by CNN and released on Tuesday, found that 55 percent of U.S. adults regard a candidate’s position on abortion as one of the crucial factors influencing their vote. Additionally, 29 percent stated that they would only vote for a candidate who aligns with their views on abortion.
About 16 percent of respondents stated that abortion is not a significant factor in their voting decisions.
The survey also indicated that Americans’ opinions on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade have remained largely unchanged since the ruling was announced last June.
According to the poll, 36 percent approved of the high court’s decision that the Constitution does not guarantee a right to abortion, while 64 percent disapproved. A significant portion of those surveyed strongly disapproved of the ruling, with 50 percent expressing strong disapproval compared to 23 percent who strongly approved.
Among those in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade, 66 percent believe that politicians who oppose abortion should leave decisions regarding abortion restrictions up to individual states. On the other hand, 34 percent believe that politicians should advocate for stricter nationwide restrictions.
Although a majority still supports leaving the issue in the hands of individual states, this percentage has decreased since last July when 80 percent favored states deciding on abortion restrictions.
Among those who disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision, 60 percent believe that their state government is not doing enough to ensure access to abortion, and 78 percent hold the same view towards the federal government.
The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS from July 1-31 and comprising 1,279 U.S. adults, has a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
