According to Poland’s Prime Minister, fighters from Russia’s private Wagner mercenary force are being strategically moved closer to NATO’s eastern flank in order to destabilize the military alliance.
These Wagner soldiers have recently begun training with the Belarus national army, prompting Poland to relocate over 1,000 troops nearer to the border. Poland even accused Belarus of violating its airspace with military helicopters.
“We should be mindful of the fact that the number of provocations will increase,” commented Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda in eastern Poland.
“The Wagner group poses an extreme danger and their relocation to the eastern flank is intended to destabilize the region,” stated Prime Minister Morawiecki.
The political leaders met in the Suwalki Gap, a strategically important area connecting the Baltic states to other NATO members and located between Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
President Nauseda estimates that there could be more than 4,000 Wagner fighters in Belarus.
“We must not only focus on national measures but also on how to handle a more complex situation, including the potential closure of the border with Belarus. This should be a coordinated effort between Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia,” Nauseda stated.
While Belarus has allowed Russian President Vladimir Putin to use its territory for the Ukraine invasion, it has not deployed its own troops to the conflict.
