Police report: Six climbers perish in Swiss Alps due to high-altitude falls and rockslides

In a tragic series of events, six mountaineers have lost their lives in the southern Swiss Alps in a matter of days, according to the regional police in Valais canton. On Tuesday, a 37-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman from Zurich tragically died while attempting to climb Lagginhorn, a towering peak above the prestigious Saas Fee ski resort. The climbers fell approximately 200 meters for reasons unknown, after reaching an altitude of around 3,960 meters.

Additionally, on Monday, a 19-year-old man from Bern fell and lost his life while descending Stockhorn mountain in the Zermatt resort ski area. It is believed that he slipped and fell, subsequently sustaining fatal injuries from a rock. Furthermore, two other mountaineers, a 26-year-old Frenchman and a 36-year-old Dutch national, died on Monday in a rockslide while climbing Aiguille du Tour, a 3,540-meter peak on the Swiss side of Mont-Blanc range. A 22-year-old Dutch national injured in the incident remains in critical condition.

Adding to the tragedy, on Sunday, a 47-year-old German-Ukrainian national was killed during an attempt to scale Weisshorn, Switzerland’s second highest peak standing at 4,506 meters. The individual fell 600 meters to their death. Police have initiated investigations into all of these incidents.

In a separate case, the remains of a German climber who had been missing since 1986 were discovered on the Theodule glacier in the Swiss Alps. Climbers found the remains and some equipment on July 12, and after DNA comparisons, it was confirmed that they belong to the alpinist who disappeared in September 1986.

These devastating incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers that mountaineers face in pursuit of their goals. The authorities continue to prioritize safety and are committed to investigating what led to these tragic outcomes.
