Police report: 32 injured as suspension bridge in Indonesia collapses

A suspension bridge in Indonesia collapsed during a duck-catching contest, resulting in injuries to 32 individuals. The incident occurred near the village of Nanga Mentukak in the East Kalimantan province on August 17, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. Spectators congregated on the bridge and along the shoreline to witness the competition. The atmosphere was joyful and filled with cheering as villagers tried to catch the fowl in the water. However, the cheers quickly turned into screams when the bridge suddenly twisted and collapsed, trapping people, including children, in the water.

According to local authorities, 32 people were injured in the collapse. Inspector Rahmad Kartono, the head of the Sekadau Police Criminal Investigation Unit, stated that some of the victims suffered broken bones. Immediate medical attention was provided, with the injured individuals either taken to the Community Health Center or referred to the hospital.

The police revealed that the spectators had been warned not to stand on the bridge, as it was known to be unstable and incapable of supporting heavy loads. They attributed the collapse to the numerous residents who gathered on the bridge to watch the duck-catching competition.

Following the incident, the injured individuals were taken to the Nanga Taman Health Center for treatment. Those with more severe injuries were transported to the Sekadau Regional General Hospital. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

An investigation by the police into the incident is still ongoing. This collapse comes almost ten years after another tragic bridge collapse in the western part of Indonesia. In 2014, ten children lost their lives when a bridge in Aceh province collapsed in floodwaters during a traditional wedding ceremony. The collapse occurred while numerous people were watching the ceremony on the bridge.

It is important to note that this incident serves as a reminder of a previous deadly bridge collapse in central Indonesia in 2011. At least three individuals were killed when a bridge connecting the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda in East Kalimantan province collapsed under traffic congestion.

In 2016, another bridge collapse occurred near the resort island of Bali, claiming the lives of at least eight individuals. The suspension bridge connecting two small islands gave way, causing victims to be crushed by debris despite the shallow water.

It is crucial for authorities to prioritize the inspection and maintenance of bridges to prevent such tragic accidents from recurring.
