Police Arrest Italian Fugitive Exposed by ‘Soccer Obsession’

  • An Italian fugitive was apprehended in Greece after being seen celebrating a soccer match.
  • Vincenzo La Porta, a suspected mafia member, had been evading capture for over ten years.
  • “His love for soccer ultimately led to his betrayal,” stated Italian authorities.

An Italian man evading authorities for over ten years was apprehended in Greece after being seen outside a restaurant, proudly displaying the colors of his beloved soccer team and celebrating their recent championship victory.

Vincenzo La Porta, aged 60, was included in Italy’s “100 most dangerous fugitives” list, having been convicted in absentia for fraud, tax evasion, and ties to the Camorra criminal organization, which is one of Italy’s oldest mafia-style groups and heavily involved in the illicit drug trade.

Italian police located La Porta outside a restaurant in Corfu, Greece and arrested him while he was riding a scooter on the street.

“His passion for soccer and dedication to the Napoli team ultimately became his downfall,” stated the police, as reported by the Associated Press. A photo posted online depicted La Porta outside a restaurant, wearing his team’s blue colors on the day of their Serie A title victory, the first in 33 years. “Unable to resist, La Porta joined in the celebration.”

The soccer match occurred in early May, and the exact date of La Porta’s arrest remains unclear.

In an interview with The Washington Post on Sunday, La Porta’s attorney, Athanasios Giannakouris, confirmed his client’s capture. “He has various health conditions,” Giannakouris remarked, adding that La Porta is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. “I hope for the best tomorrow.”

La Porta had been employed as an assistant chef in Corfu and had a wife and child. If extradited, he will face a 14-year prison sentence in his home country.
