National’s Billion-Dollar Barbie Movie Sets New Record for Female Directors

Greta Gerwig is experiencing newfound success. In just three weeks, her film “Barbie” is on track to surpass $1 billion in global ticket sales, breaking the previous record set by Patty Jenkins, director of “Wonder Woman.”

“Barbie,” directed and co-written by Gerwig, earned an additional $53 million from 4,178 theaters in North America this weekend. The film, led and produced by Margot Robbie, has held the top spot for three weeks and shows no signs of stopping. Warner Bros. predicts that “Barbie” will surpass $1 billion by the end of the day.

Out of 53 movies in box office history that have made over $1 billion (excluding inflation), “Barbie” now boasts the highest grossing film directed by a woman, surpassing “Wonder Woman’s” $821.8 million global total.

While “Barbie” falls behind three movies co-directed by women — “Frozen” ($1.3 billion), “Frozen 2” ($1.45 billion), and “Captain Marvel” ($1.1 billion) — in terms of total global earnings, it has surpassed “Captain Marvel” domestically with $459.4 million, claiming the North American record for live-action films directed by women.
