Pest Control Experts Report Soaring Bedbug Infestation, But Insurers Deny Coverage for Removal and Repairs

Experts are warning that Britain’s bedbug infestation is worsening, with pest-control teams busier than ever. However, insurers are unlikely to cover the costs of removal and damage caused by bedbugs. The crisis first gained attention when France experienced a severe outbreak, and now concerns have been raised about bedbugs on London’s public transport. A pest control company operating in multiple areas, including London, has reported a significant increase in weekly call-outs, particularly in Luton where residents have resorted to extreme measures such as throwing away beds and carpets. Bedbug infestations have also been reported in Radlett and Stevenage.

To combat the issue, Luton Council’s website has warned residents that they have limited resources to deal with the problem and that treatments are not free. Residents are advised to wash bedding and clothing on a hot cycle or keep them in sealed plastic bags in the freezer. However, insurers like Aviva have clarified that bedbug infestations are not covered under standard home insurance policies.

Transport for London (TfL) has started disinfecting Tube seats daily to prevent infestations, but experts express concern that tourists returning from Marseille, France, for the Rugby World Cup might inadvertently introduce the bugs to the UK. Online-Bedrooms advises using plastic bags on Metro seats and thoroughly checking hotel rooms for bedbugs.

Professor Lucy Easthope, known for her work in emergency response, has warned that Britain is ill-prepared for a bedbug invasion. Meanwhile, the French government is struggling to contain the nationwide panic caused by the infestation, with residents discarding their furniture and mattresses due to the problem. Despite claims of bedbugs on the Victoria line, TfL assures the public that it is taking all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of bedbugs on public transport in London.
