CVUSD Superintendent’s Urgent Alert: Protecting Parents from Scam Calls – Stay Informed!

The Coachella Valley Unified School District issued a warning on Wednesday to families regarding a disturbing phone scam that targets parents by falsely claiming that their children have been kidnapped and demanding a ransom.

CVUSD Superintendent Luis R. Valentino addressed the issue in a message to parents, alerting them that the scammers are utilizing advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, to make the calls appear more persuasive and terrifying. These criminals often provide false information about the child’s location, creating a sense of urgency and causing panic among parents.

In response to this alarming scam, Valentino advised parents to remain calm if they receive a similar call. He suggested that they promptly contact the school, report the incident to law enforcement, refuse to pay any ransom demanded, block unfamiliar numbers, and educate their family members about the importance of not sharing personal information with strangers.

To prevent falling victim to this deceptive scheme, parents should ask the callers for specific details about their child without revealing any information about themselves or their family. Valentino also emphasized the significance of verifying the child’s safety and location by reaching out to the respective school.

Valentino expressed understanding and compassion for the distress and anxiety caused by these calls and urged parents to stay informed and remain vigilant during these challenging times.
