Pence believes advocating for abortion restrictions is a “winning issue” for the GOP

Former Vice President Mike Pence believes that advocating for stricter abortion restrictions is not only important on a moral level but also a winning issue for the Republican Party. In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Pence called on all Republican candidates for the 2024 presidential nomination to support a national 15-week ban on abortion.

Pence’s call comes after he urged Republican presidential candidates to back a 15-week national ban during the annual conference for the Faith & Freedom Coalition. This call coincided with the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.

According to Pence, “We must not rest, and we must not relent until we restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law in every state in this country.” He believes that every Republican candidate for president should support a ban on abortion before 15 weeks as a minimum nationwide standard.

Approximately 24 states have already taken steps to significantly restrict abortion, either through trigger bans or other legislation. Many of these states have nearly banned the procedure altogether. The issue of abortion played a crucial role in the 2022 midterm elections following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization opinion, which granted states the authority to decide on abortion access.

Exit polls from the midterms indicate that abortion was a top concern for voters, with a majority of those who prioritized the issue voting for Democrats.

Pence argued that implementing a 15-week ban would align the United States with most European countries. While Europe generally permits abortion on request during the first trimester, some countries allow for longer periods.

Senator Lindsey Graham, who introduced a bill to ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, encouraged Republicans to embrace the abortion issue and not be “afraid” of it. He stated that the Democratic position on abortion is the extreme one.

In summary, Pence’s push for a national 15-week abortion ban reflects his belief that it is not only a moral imperative but also a politically advantageous stance. He urges all Republican presidential candidates to support this ban, citing the need to restore the sanctity of life in American law.
