Paul McCartney Holds Bruce Springsteen Responsible for Extended Performances: ‘You’re to Blame’

Paul McCartney, in a recent interview with Conan O’Brien, expressed his observation that modern musicians are expected to perform much longer concerts compared to the Beatles in the 1960s. McCartney jokingly placed the blame on Bruce Springsteen for this trend. According to McCartney, during the Beatles’ time, it was common to have multiple acts in a show, so no one performed long sets. However, nowadays, artists like Springsteen do three to four-hour shows. McCartney humorously told Springsteen that it’s his fault for setting the precedent.

As a musician himself, McCartney stated that one can no longer get away with performing for just an hour. Back in the Beatles’ era, they only did half-hour performances and still got paid for it. McCartney playfully credited Springsteen for inspiring musicians to extend their concert durations.

Interestingly, McCartney revealed that after the Beatles broke up in 1970, he actually contemplated quitting music altogether. He considered it a challenging task to follow the success of the Beatles and was unsure if he should continue his musical journey. However, McCartney took the risk and continued his solo career, which ultimately paid off.

In a separate interview with O’Brien, Springsteen admitted that he had “screwed the whole thing up” by playing long shows. He acknowledged that when compared to the Beatles’ shorter concerts, his shows seemed excessive. In a light-hearted manner, Springsteen joked that he had no choice but to continue performing longer sets after setting that precedent.

This discussion highlights the change in concert expectations over the years and the influence of artists like Springsteen on the extended concert format. Both McCartney and Springsteen have played significant roles in shaping the music industry and continue to captivate audiences with their performances.
