Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, expressed his interest in participating in flag football at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This news has sparked excitement among fans and athletes alike.
In an interview before the Chiefs’ game against the Miami Dolphins, Mahomes shared his thoughts. Despite the age difference, if he maintains his agility, he would love to represent the United States in the prestigious event.
“I definitely want to. But I’ve seen some of those guys play the flag football. They’re a little faster than I am,” he said. “I know there’s not like linemen blocking for you. I’ll be 31, 32 years old. So if I can still move around then, I’m going to try to get out there and throw the football around maybe in LA.”
Mahomes, who will be 32 during the 2028 Games, is currently in the middle of his 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs. He jokingly mentioned not letting coach Andy Reid or Chiefs general manager Brett Veach know about his aspirations for fear of their disapproval.

Flag football was recently approved as one of the sports for the 2028 Games, and this news has fueled speculation about the potential roster for the U.S. team. One player who has already voiced his interest is Tyreek Hill, Mahomes’ former Chiefs teammate and current Dolphins wide receiver.
Hill expressed his excitement about building a flag football dream team of NFL players on his podcast. He believes it would be an incredible experience to compete at the Olympic level and represent the U.S. in Los Angeles.
“Just being able to say, ‘Hey, I was able to play on the Olympic level and compete for a medal for the U.S.’ That would be special,” he said. “Who wouldn’t want to do that? Travel to L.A. and compete in a flag championship. I think it would be so dope if other NFL players buy into that.
“If they’re serious about bringing flag football, sign me up. Sign the Cheetah up.”
Flag football at the Olympics will be a 5-on-5 event played on a 70- x 30-yard field, without offensive or defensive linemen. It’s a fast-paced and exciting adaptation of traditional football.
The U.S. men’s team already achieved gold at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, while the women’s team settled for silver after a tough final match. This success has only increased the anticipation for flag football at the Olympics.
