Passengers on a flight from the UK to Corfu, Greece, experienced a challenging ordeal when their plane was diverted to Athens due to limited landing space, leaving them stranded for several hours in scorching temperatures, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

The Jet2 flight departed from Manchester and departed about an hour later than scheduled. As they approached Corfu, the pilot informed them that they couldn’t land at the airport due to congestion, according to passenger Michael Webster.

Webster described the situation with multiple planes circling and running low on fuel, leading to a diversion to Athens, which was approximately 300 miles away from their intended destination.

Upon landing in Athens, the passengers found themselves trapped inside the sweltering aircraft for over two hours, enduring temperatures of around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Webster expressed the discomfort, stating, “Never mind outside the plane!”

Webster told the Manchester Evening News that passengers were frustrated, with babies crying and hot and unhappy toddlers. The plane eventually arrived in Corfu, but it was approximately eight hours behind schedule.

Jet2 has not yet responded to Insider’s request for comment on the incident.

This summer, extreme heat has disrupted travel in the US and Europe. American Airlines passengers complained about being stranded on a hot plane for six hours without provisions, while individuals stuck on a United Airlines flight for seven hours described it as “torture,” according to reports by Insider.

The extreme heat has also affected cruise ship passengers, forcing some to sleep outdoors due to broken air conditioning, as disclosed by Carnival passengers in an interview with Insider.
