Pakistan military saves 8 individuals, including children, trapped in a cable car hanging 900 feet above ground.

August 22 (UPI) – The Pakistan military successfully carried out a daring rescue mission on Tuesday, saving six children and two adults from a perilous situation. The cable car they were traveling in malfunctioned and left them hanging precariously 900 feet in the air in the mountainous region of Pakistan.

According to Al Jazeera, Bilal Faizi, an official from the Pakistan emergency service, stated that the two adults were the last people to be rescued. The children were on their way to school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when one of the chairlift cables snapped, leaving them stranded for over 15 hours. After an aerial rescue operation was suspended due to sunset, a ground rescue was initiated.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar Kakar expressed his admiration for the collaborative efforts of the military, rescue departments, district administration, and local people. “Great teamwork,” he said on X.

Tanveer Ur Rehman, the deputy commissioner of Battagram district, explained that the cable car had completed multiple trips before the cable snapped. The delicate rescue efforts by the Army Special Services were hindered by strong winds. The chairlift was suspended above a ravine, and a helicopter was used to survey the area and devise a rescue plan. Despite the challenges, the operation aimed to move swiftly.

Retired Wing Commander Asim Nawaz emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe distance between the helicopter and the chairlift due to potential bad weather conditions in the area. “It is better if the helicopter is 60 to 80 feet away from the chairlift,” he stated.

During the rescue operation, emergency personnel utilized a technique called “sling operation” to save the cable car passengers. This involves hoisting an emergency worker with a sling and approaching the car. The victim is then securely fastened to the rescuer or another sling and lifted to safety. The helicopter pilot and rescuer had to exercise caution to avoid the downdrafts created by the helicopter’s propellers.
