Overnight, SpaceX Engages in Intensive Activity

Four astronauts have completed their six-month stay at the International Space Station and returned to Earth on Monday. Their SpaceX capsule safely landed in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida. The returning astronauts include NASA’s Stephen Bowen and Warren “Woody” Hoburg, Russia’s Andrei Fedyaev, and the United Arab Emirates’ Sultan al-Neyadi, who became the first person from the Arab world to spend an extended time in space. Before leaving the space station, they expressed their longing for hot showers, steaming cups of coffee, and the refreshing ocean air that they had missed since arriving in March.

The homecoming of the astronauts was postponed by a day due to unfavorable weather conditions at the splashdown locations. However, when they finally returned, it provided a spectacular sight in the middle of the night, as the capsule streaked through the sky over Cape Canaveral towards a splashdown near Jacksonville. The astronauts expressed their joy in being back on Earth, and SpaceX Mission Control radioed that they were surrounded by a roomful of happy people. SpaceX had launched their replacements over a week ago. Later this month, another crew switch will take place, as two Russians and one American who have been in space for an entire year will return home. Their stay was extended after their Soyuz capsule experienced a coolant leak, requiring a new craft to be launched. In between crew changes, the space station is currently inhabited by seven astronauts.
