Over Half of Parents’ Decision to Have More Children Is Influenced by Climate Change

The issue of climate change is significantly influencing people’s choices regarding employment, the companies they support, and even the decision to have children.

A recent survey reveals that 53% of parents consider climate change when deciding to expand their families.

The survey, commissioned by computer tech company HP and conducted by global research firm Morning Consult, involved over 5,000 adult parents from India, Mexico, Singapore, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Approximately 1,000 parents from each country participated in the survey between May 18 and 26.

According to the findings, an overwhelming 91% of parents express concerns about climate change. The specific effects that worry them the most are rising temperatures (62%), water shortages (51%), changing sea levels (43%), and extreme weather events (43%).

Furthermore, parents state that climate change concerns also impact their career decisions. The HP study reveals that 43% of respondents reconsider working for a company based on its dedication to environmental and social issues.

The purchasing decisions of parents are likewise influenced by a company’s efforts to address climate change. Almost two-thirds (64%) of surveyed parents prefer sustainably sourced products, while 60% consider a company’s sustainability practices to be a significant factor in their purchasing choices.

Notably, parents display a willingness to pay more for sustainable products. The survey found that 75% of parents are prepared to pay extra for sustainable clothing, 62% for pet supplies, 59% for tech purchases like laptops, and 66% for cell phones.

This commitment to sustainability occurs against the backdrop of rising living costs, with 84% of parents acknowledging the general increase in expenses. It is worth noting that 57% of parents find it time-consuming to engage in environmentally conscious actions such as composting, recycling, and purchasing products made from recycled materials. Nevertheless, they still prioritize these practices over wasteful disposal.

Parents firmly believe that corporations bear a significant responsibility for making climate-conscious decisions. Over half (51%) of parents feel that companies hold a substantial amount of accountability for acting in the best interest of the climate, while only 36% place the responsibility on customers to incentivize sustainable behavior.
