In honor of Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, Riverside County government offices will be closed on Monday.
Additionally, all Riverside County Superior Court courthouses and most county administrative offices will be closed for the holiday. Residents are advised to check with their city offices for any changes to service schedules.
While curbside trash, recyclables, and organic waste collection will proceed as scheduled, residents should consult the rcwaste.org website for the updated waste hauler schedules.
The Palm Springs Black History Committee organized two Juneteenth events – a King and Queen Royal Pageant on Friday and a Juneteenth Celebration of Culture event on Saturday. Both events took place at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, located at 480 W. Tramview Road in Palm Springs.
Palm Springs city officials shared a statement, explaining, “Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The holiday originated in Texas, where on this date in 1865, following the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.”
Various Juneteenth Celebration events were held prior to the holiday, including the Inland Empire’s Black Collective event at Fairmount Park in Riverside. The event featured retail vendors, live music, food vendors, as well as a pop-up vaccine clinic and health resources.
