Over 800 Missing Items Reported from the Canadian Museum of History

An audit of the Canadian Museum of History has revealed that more than 800 historical items are at risk of being lost and the museum has no plans to address the issue. The report, published by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, examined the museum’s management practices and operations. One of the major findings was a “significant deficiency” in the museum’s conservation practices, leaving its collections exposed to various risks. Between 2012 and 2022, over 800 items were declared missing, and over 300 items were improperly stored. Additionally, there were more than 15,000 items with no source information. The report also highlighted a lack of regular and systematic reviews of electronic security access to storage areas. The report emphasized that proper conservation and safeguarding of artifacts are crucial for preserving historical items for future generations. Despite these weaknesses, the museum was acknowledged for its good practices in corporate governance, strategic planning, and risk management. However, improvements were recommended. It is worth noting that the Canadian Museum of History manages a vast collection of over four million objects. This issue of missing items is not unique, as other Canadian institutions, such as the Royal Canadian Mint, have also faced similar thefts in recent years. In one case, an employee was fired in 2018 after a significant amount of gold went missing from the Mint’s facility in Ottawa. Another employee was accused in 2016 of smuggling gold in his rectum.
