Former CEO asserts that platform is now “healthier and safer” than previous year

In a Thursday interview with CNBC, the CEO of X, formerly known as Twitter, confidently claimed that the platform has become “healthier and safer” than it was a year ago. Linda Yaccarino stated that since the company’s acquisitions, they have implemented brand safety and content moderation tools that were previously unheard of.

Yaccarino also highlighted X’s recently introduced “Freedom of Speech, not Freedom of Reach” policy. This policy, as described in an April 2023 blog post, revolves around restricting the reach of tweets that violate the platform’s policies, while preserving freedom of speech. Yaccarino emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal content, while also stating that lawful but awful content would be labeled, deamplified, and demonetized.

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, concerns about increased hate speech began to emerge. Within a month, 50 of the top 100 advertisers suspended their advertisements on the platform. These developments were reported by left-leaning watchdog group Media Matters for America.

Last month, X faced a dispute with the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), an organization tracking hate speech on the platform. The social media site threatened legal action against the CCDH, accusing them of making misleading claims. CCDH executive officer Imran Ahmed condemned Musk and labeled him a bully who uses attack dogs to silence his opponents.
