July 28 (UPI) — Super Typhoon Doksuri made landfall in southeast China on Friday, bringing winds of 112 mph and heavy rain. The powerful storm forced the evacuation of 416,000 people and led to the closure of numerous businesses, schools, and factories.
The typhoon struck Fujian province’s coastline at approximately 10 a.m. local time, as confirmed by the National Meteorological Center.
China has not reported any fatalities due to the typhoon, but 114 people were injured in Quanzhou following the storm-induced flooding. In the Philippines, Doksuri overturned a crowded ferry, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 people.
According to Chinese state media, Doksuri caused power outages in certain parts of Xiamen. In Taiwan, about 278,182 households experienced power loss, one person was killed, and 68 individuals sustained injuries. Additionally, over 200 flights were canceled or delayed in Taiwan.
Air, rail, and maritime services were suspended as Typhoon Doksuri continued its northwest trajectory.
The China Meteorological Administration heightened emergency responses to Level One for the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi.
Doksuri is the most intense typhoon China has experienced this year, leaving a trail of uprooted trees and damaged roofs in various cities.
In response to the disaster, Chinese authorities allocated approximately $40.65 million in disaster-relief funds for the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, and Zhejiang. These funds will be used for local emergency rescue and disaster relief efforts, particularly focused on search and rescue operations, as well as the relocation of affected residents. The funds will also contribute to the repair of damaged houses.
Furthermore, financial assistance will be provided to Sichuan and Inner Mongolia to assist with flood and drought situations.
