Orlando’s Top Prosecutor’s Suspension Imposed by DeSantis

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken the extraordinary step of suspending State Attorney Monique Worrell of the 9th Judicial Circuit for neglecting her duty to prosecute criminals. During a news conference, DeSantis emphasized the importance of following the laws enacted by the Legislature. This marks the second time in the past year that DeSantis has suspended an elected state attorney, a rare move according to the New York Times.

DeSantis cited three criminal cases as the basis for Worrell’s suspension, including a shooting incident involving two Orlando police officers. In August of last year, DeSantis also removed Andrew Warren, a Tampa area state attorney, from office, accusing him of negligence and incompetence. Similar to Worrell, Warren had signed statements opposing criminal charges against abortion providers and individuals seeking abortions. He also expressed a reluctance to prosecute minor offenses and refused to charge individuals providing gender-affirming healthcare.

To replace Worrell, DeSantis appointed Andrew Bain, an experienced Orange County judge who previously served as assistant state attorney in Orlando. DeSantis emphasized the need for justice and public safety, stating that the people of Central Florida deserve a state attorney who will uphold the law and prevent violent criminals from endangering the community.

In summary, Governor Ron DeSantis has taken decisive action to ensure that the duties of a state attorney are fulfilled and to protect the interests of the people of Florida.
