A tragic incident occurred in Tustin, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to her passenger. The responsible party, Gerardo Joaquin Garcia Lopez, a 25-year-old resident of Santa Ana, has now been charged with several offenses linked to drunk driving.
Lopez is facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08% or more causing injury. Additionally, he faces sentencing enhancements due to the great bodily harm inflicted on two victims.
According to court records, the victim who lost her life in this tragic incident is Rezvan Hekmat, a 67-year-old resident of Laguna Hills. Miguel Xum, the passenger in Hekmat’s vehicle, sustained injuries as well.
Authorities were alerted to the crash at Barranca Parkway and Tustin Ranch Road at approximately 5 p.m. on June 4. Lieutenant Ryan Coe of the Tustin Police Department provided this information.
Lopez had two passengers in his vehicle, one of whom fortunately escaped injury during the accident, as shared by Coe.
As per Coe’s statement, Lopez allegedly ran a red light while heading west on Barranca, leading to a collision with Hekmat’s vehicle. The impact caused both vehicles to collide with other vehicles in the intersection.
Hekmat was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries later on, Coe mentioned.
Lopez himself was admitted to the hospital following the crash and was subsequently arrested upon his release.
The criminal complaint reveals shocking details, claiming that Lopez had a blood-alcohol level of 0.41, which is more than five times the legal limit. Furthermore, he was driving at an excessive speed higher than 65 mph.
