Opinion: Time for TDs to Devise Solutions for a Mounting Set of Issues During Summer Recess

During their downtime, it would be beneficial for officials to reflect on the recurring messes we find ourselves in as a nation.

To significantly improve quality of life in our country, we must shift our focus beyond the next electoral cycle.

While it’s understandable that concerns about holding onto political seats can be draining, they should not completely overshadow any long-term planning.

How often have our ambitions in housing and health been stifled by our inability to address anything beyond the immediate agenda?

This week, the Economic and Social Research Institute reported that home ownership is becoming increasingly difficult for those under 40, leading to a rise in young people moving back in with their parents.

Amidst such circumstances, one initiative stands out as refreshing and welcome: the acquisition of privately owned sites for the rapid delivery of public housing.

The Land Development Agency (LDA), responsible for providing affordable homes and social housing, is set to receive significant additional funding. This is hoped to initiate a program of acquisitions and engage landowners.

This initiative should result in the availability of new cost-rental homes or at least more affordable prices for housing.

The solutions for fixing the housing crisis and other pressing issues remain elusive, despite extensive debates. It has been suggested that aligning the number of people living in each house with the EU average would result in 260,000 additional households in Ireland.

However, we have yet to address incentivizing change or providing suitable alternative accommodation for those who wish to downsize.

While it is argued that builders and developers would construct more if they saw profitability, there are also claims that some are holding onto sites in hopes of better prices.

Others may be willing to proceed with construction but face bureaucratic and planning obstacles that drive up costs. The proposal by the LDA may signal a more imaginative and proactive approach by the government in solving the housing crisis.

We are in dire need of diverse solutions for housing and other issues. It is possible to find creative and imaginative approaches if we actively seek them out.

While governments are not expected to have all the answers, being open to new possibilities creates the necessary space for change.
