Opinion Piece: RTÉ’s Deception Has Backfired, Causing Self-Inflicted Damage

In today’s society, narratives are more effectively conveyed when a recognizable individual is associated with the story. Therefore, Ryan Tubridy’s challenges became representative of the broadcaster as a whole. However, the issues plaguing the national broadcaster extend far beyond the scope of one celebrity.

The fact that the station attempted to conceal Tubridy’s nominal €500,000 salary package symbolizes a larger underlying problem.

According to the Grant Thornton report, it is plausible that his earnings were underreported by €120,000 in 2017, 2018, and 2019 in order to keep his annual earnings below half a million euros, aligning with RTÉ’s objectives. This revelation of high salaries did not align with the station’s image as it struggled with declining revenues and sought employee pay reductions.

It is understandable that the workforce expressed anger upon learning that executives knowingly deceived the public. For any organization receiving state funding, such behavior is reprehensible. The credibility and trust of a public broadcaster are vital, making this self-destructive move even more detrimental.

As a result of this debacle, license fee revenues have decreased by €1 million per week, severely damaging public confidence.

The report also confirmed that Tubridy had no involvement in the adjustments made by the broadcaster in 2020 to his reported earnings between 2017-2019, totaling €120,000.

RTÉ Chair, Siún Ní Raghallaigh, acknowledged that the report highlighted “poor internal communication and weak processes,” as well as poor governance, management control deficiencies, and failures in finance.

Ms. Ní Raghallaigh criticized the “siloed management culture” and emphasized the need for reform.

Media Minister Catherine Martin expressed deep concern over the report’s findings.

A broadcaster cannot afford to mislead the public upon whom it relies for revenue.

For RTÉ to have a viable future as a public broadcaster, stability is crucial. However, any financial model agreed upon with the state must be fair, transparent, and eliminate any competitive advantage.

The media sector in Ireland faces significant challenges. RTÉ has enjoyed the privilege of utilizing its influence to promote itself and hold a commanding position in ad sales while benefiting from guaranteed revenue from license fees. It is regrettable that its own shortcomings have jeopardized this position.

Although the broadcaster can recover, it must relinquish its privileged status.
